blog and adsense stats

blog stats 2, originally uploaded by 99zeros.

well, here's the updated traffic info from my blog. you can see a very slight traffic spike a few weeks ago when news that i joined plaxo hit the press. in general, things are settling down - which is quite nice! now, i can use this blog for its original purpose: keeping friends and family up to date on what i'm up to and my thoughts and feelings in general. looks like there might be a few thousand extra readers, but i'€™ll just count you guys as a few thousand extra friends ;)

in related news, since google has done some revision of their adsense rules, i can finally increase transparency of the advertising i've been running on this site.

i put adsense up on my blog on 2/9 and for the month of february, i made $194.21. at the time, the ads were only running on the right hand side so it was getting really crappy exposure.

for the month of march, so far i've made $133.22. sometime a few weeks ago, i added a second ad unit at the top of the page as an experiment. i figured that clearly the more prominent placement would net me better results; however, click through rates stayed approximately the same though. numerous people have told me how they've optimized their sites for adsense. i find it quite interesting that people spend so much time fiddling with the system - the way they describe it, it sounds like a full time job! fortunately, i’ve already got a full time job, so i'€™m not too interested in optimizing my ads.

so in total, that'™s $327.43 plus another $60 some odd bucks from amazon going towards celiac disease research :)

i'm blogging from flickr again; i hope this time the connection between flickr and blogger doesn't get messed up, resulting in duplicate posts. with the performance of blogger lately, i'm keeping my fingers crossed!

update: well, it got messed up again and double posted. they need to make posting blog entries transacted! (props to my old co-workers at microsoft working on indigo)

I've just read the following:

"Don't share how much you've earned. That's going to be hard for lots of bloggers but it is against the terms and conditions and will get you kicked out."

Thought I'd let you know.

Chuanz: how do i increase my hit profile?

ekapa - that's under the old terms of service. the new terms state the following:

"You may accurately disclose the amount of Google’s gross payments to You pursuant to the Program."

talking about detailed click-throughs and other stats is still off limits. however, a VC did it in detail and AFAIK is still alive and well :)

Google should be applauded for opening up their TOS and allowing people to post this info. But we still ought to know the Google/Blogger split. You would not take a job without knowing the split in revenue as a sales professional. Why won't Google disclose this number? Is it because they are embarrassed of how badly they are ripping bloggers off? Would they be afraid that a 90/10 split in the favor of Google would be negative PR even considered, god forbid, "evil" by some? This is a good first step for Google but they still need more disclosure.

Microsoft's new ad system that displays content related ads seems to do everything better than Google's AdSense.

Heavy user webmaster might make the shift, because with Microsoft it is much easier to track the development of different websites and even single pages. Google runs out of Channels quite easily.

ekapa, I think that getting booted by your employer because of your workplace blogging, could also rocket your earnings. I don't recommend it though :P

Also good measure is to count revenue per 1000 visitors. If you don't manage to pool up that many, then you just need more quality or contradictory content for your blog. 1000/day aim for that first and build it from there.

Thomas, good point there. My personal "evil" meter goes red if I am on loosing side of 50/50 deal.

How did you generate that graph and where did you get the information. I use Blogger and Adsense and have been unable to find that detailed level of information or any such graphss.

It looks nice and I want it! :-)

I had a similar wonderful spike in pageloads recently as well. In fact I have had over 200,000 in just two months but get lttle to no Google adsense cash!

http://outrageous-ebay.blogspot.com/

I would love to earn $100-$200 a month and have read everything I can to optimize clicks but to no avail.

While you were at Google did you discover a simple trick that us silly bloggers can use for help?
